COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course encompasses a rich exploration of Art Education and contemporary arts in Sydney Australia. While abroad students will have opportunities to examine the Frames Curriculum model and observe teachers and students in 7-12 Visual Arts classrooms throughout the Sydney area. Students will also participate in discussions about current International issues in Art Education with faculty and students at the University of New South Wales and 7-12 Visual Arts teachers from the Sydney area. Additionally, students will explore Sydney and Sydney Harbor and will have opportunities to take excursions to art galleries, museums, markets, beaches and the Blue Mountains region to experience modern art, photography, and contemporary and indigenous Aboriginal art.
COURSE OVERVIEW
During this two-week study tour experience based in Sydney, Australia participants will:
· learn about global, 7-12 visual arts teaching practices, issues, pedagogical approaches, and curriculum design
· participate in hands-on activities, classroom observations, and discussions with Australian 7-12 Visual Arts teachers
· experience art museums, galleries, an exhibition of student artwork, and local events to interact with the local culture
· participate in discussions and seminars with 7-12 visual arts teachers from Sydney schools and Art Education faculty and their graduate and undergraduate students from the Visual Arts Education program at the University of New South Wales.
The goals of the course adhere to the University’s mission of Realizing the Democratic Ideal (RDI) by including the following ethical and intellectual commitments:

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this course the student will within clinical observation reflections be able to:
1. Identify theoretical constructs that lie behind art making and criticism
2. Identify similarities and differences between Australian and US Art Education secondary curriculum models
3. Analyze the ways in which Australian secondary art educators implement the theoretical Frames (subjective, structural, cultural, postmodern) throughout their art curriculum
4. Employ the Frames construct and the Conceptual Framework (artist, audience, artwork, world) in writing a secondary visual arts unit of study

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
Reflection/ Process Journal 750pts
Due 8/11/19
Throughout the course students will be required to make directed and independent entries in this diary/journal. Entries will consist of:
· daily activity reflections: 50 pts per day (2 pages at least per day)
o observation notes and reflections from school visits
o notes from seminars and activities at the University of New South Wales
o directed entries and reflections completed during excursions, museum and gallery visits and cultural activities
o artistic and written records of experiences while abroad supported by ephemera and materials gathered while abroad
o ideas and sketches for artworks, lesson plans, projects, etc.

GRADING SCALE
90% - 100% = A, 80% - 89% = B, 70% - 79% = C, 60 – 69% = D, 59% and below = F
